What is the importance of naming in the black community?

On April 22, 2022 we took over all three stories of the recently abandoned Stanhope Hall at Princeton University the spring semester of my senior year. Each floor demonstrated an aspect of my thesis about the importance of naming in black culture. The basement feautured portraits of US Presidents who held slaves. The first floor featured the portraits of four of my classmates and Vice President of Student Life Rochelle Calhoun. And the top floor featured art that accompanied my study of enslaved men named Moses on Carroll plantations in the 18th and 19th century.
